Adhering to the universal mantra of Education for All, the Pangasinan State University embarked on a Basic Filipino Sign Language training to give more opportunities for differently-abled students to complete an academic degree.

Organized by the Admission and Guidance Services Unit under the Students and Alumni Affairs Office, along with the Gender and Development Unit, the activity had the frontline personnel from PSU’s offices as participants.

The five-day training slated from May 23-26, 2022, was conducted online, while the last day (June 1) was held face-to-face at the university’s audio-visual room.

Ms. Marinuelle Aquino, Head of the Admission and Guidance Services, said learning sign language words is a great way to build a basic vocabulary foundation to ensure that clients with hearing impairment will be adequately attended to with their needs.

Studying sign language encourages personnel and students to become more aware of and sensitive to members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing population. Studies also show that using it will enhance one’s cognitive functions, resulting in higher abstract and creative thinking, better problem-solving skills, better listening skills, and greater academic achievement.

The University gives the inclusive education program high regard as it inculcates to its teaching, non-teaching staff, and students the benefits and importance of diversity, cooperation, and consideration of others.
